Lighthouse International brightens Harlem seniors' lives with vision care

Angel Estrada now has a different view of the world.

Late last year, Estrada, 81, an ex-prizefighter and truckdriver, was told by an optometrist that buying new glasses would be a waste of money.

The East Harlem resident, who in recent years has been plagued by low vision and night vision problems, accepted the advice. But a few weeks ago, Estrada attended an eye education session for seniors organized by Lighthouse International at the Corsi Senior Center on E. 116th St.

Estrada filled out a questionnaire, and an eye examination was scheduled at the nonprofit vision health care group's office on E. 59th St. After the exam, he received a new pair of glasses.

"I can now see at night, and I see a lot better. It is not 2-0/20, but it is 2-0/40," said Estrada. "I am very thankful to have been reevaluated, and I now encourage others at the senior center to be evaluated."

Estrada is one of Lighthouse International's success stories. The group's two-year program - dubbed East Harlem: Early Action Saves Sight - targets seniors, offering them vision education and services.

"This innovative program will help residents in these communities gain access to vision health services and understand the need for annual eye exams," said Mark Ackermann, president and CEO of Lighthouse International.

Octavia Flemister, 75, also is thankful for the program, which offers help with transportation to eye exams.

The retired child care counselor has cataracts, and has difficulty reading and seeing at night.

Flemister attended a session at the Stanley Isaac Senior Center on 93rd. St, and arranged to have her eyes examined.

"I was given eye drops, and the treatment was so good. I got new glasses, and now I see so much better. I tell all my friends that this was a blessing," she said.

Andrea Saldivar, director of Geriatrics and Diabetes at Lighthouse International, who has been working with people with diabetes in Harlem since October, said the rate of the disease in older people is quite high.

Saldivar also noted that the rates of glaucoma in African-Americans and Latinos also are high in Harlem.

The short sessions at senior centers focus on diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma and low vision.

"We encourage them to have tests," said Saldivar. "Loss of vision does not come hand in hand with aging."

More than 8 million people older than 60 in the U.S. have diabetes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

"We recommend that people with diabetes get a comprehensive, dilated-eye examination at least once a year. Diabetic eye disease usually has no symptoms, so regular eye exams are important for early detection and timely treatment," said Dr. Bruce Rosenthal, chief of low vision programs at Lighthouse International.

In addition to aiding seniors with transportation to their exams, the program helps them with other obstacles, such as language and lack of insurance.

"We help undocumented people, those who are underinsured, help in filling out questionnaires, organize transportation and act as an interpreter for the Spanish-speaking community," said Maria Cruz, a patient navigator with the group.

"We are very proud of what we are doing in the community," said Ackermann, noting that Lighthouse International had received funding through donations for the program for two years.

He aded that he is hopeful it would be an ongoing project.

Kid suffering from eye cancer

 Fate has been cruel to a poor couple from Nilagiri area in Balasore. Gyana Ranjan Prusty and Ritarani, native of Khunta area here, have been running from pillar to post seeking financial help for treatment of their only son who suffers from eye cancer.

The three-year-old kid Subham has already lost one eye.

“He was keeping well till January 18 when he started vomiting and his left eye turned red. We consulted a local doctor who advised us to admit him in the district headquarters hospital,” said Gyana, a salesman in a medicine store at Nilagiri.

“The doctors said that he had developed a tumour in his eye. On his advice, we shifted Subham to a private hospital at Cuttack where we came to know that he has eye cancer. Though we removed the left eye, it could not prevent the disease from spreading to the right eye,” he said.

The poor couple have spent all their money they had saved.

Gyana earns a meagre Rs 2,000 from the store and having sold a piece of land, the couple now do not have a penny for Subham’s treatment.

The couple who have been living in a financially distress condition due to acute poverty, have appealed to the administration, elected representatives and other people to provide assistance for a major operation of their son.

Many local ophthalmologists are participating in a statewide program aimed at getting diabetics to have annual eye exams.

In Fast Track, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, members agree to schedule diabetic patients on an expedited basis when requested by primary care physicians or by the patients themselves.

An annual eye exam is recommended for all diabetics to help detect and prevent vision loss associated with the disease.
